I found this post about podcasts as social software from the Gardner Writes blog that I found after reading this article.
The social nature of podcasting along with the personal touch of the instructor's podcasts is especially interesting for me in my online classes. For those that teach larger course sections, it might also be a way to provide that personal touch.
There is a comment made that we have to get past the "I want to put all my lectures online as podcasts" to thinking about using them more engagingly. This is especially true since we aren't much past that with online courses.
