This afternoon Amazon delivered my copy of Second Life: The Official Guide.
Although there are numerous free online resources, I still rely on books to really study difficult topics. I've exhausted what I think I can do by happenstance at any rate of progress. I discovered from my quick scan of the book that I have an Inventory item called Library that contains many free items given to newbies that many of us overlook - I did. I jumped to the education appendix at the back and am glad to know that I have discovered some of the best ed places available in SL - apparently ISTE's rapid growth happened after this book was published last December because right now they are the first place I would send most educators.
Then, I discovered there is an old western town Rambler County, Texas, that people can visit. I had already thought about including a virtual campus tour but this makes me think about possibly finding a way to build a "virtual Carthage" - where I grew up in Missouri - its courthouse and precious moments would be a ripe canvas to design. (Realize here I would hire most of this done since I think building would quickly frustrate me.)
I've also started communicating in RL with someone whose professional interests are similar to mine but who comes from a completely different background - and someone I very much doubt I would have meet in RL given that our paths might not never cross given our geographical distance.
Wow, this is very enlightening news.
